Quilting with a longarm
My longarm quilting machine is a sewing machine with a long free arm. It's mounted on a 3.60 m wide frame with a carriage. The frame has three rollers to which the top and backing of the quilt are attached. The easy-to-use thread guide, digital thread tension control, and, last but not least, the stitch regulator ensure perfect stitches.

My longarm also comes with a Q-matic. This is a computer program developed specifically for the longarm. It offers a very large selection of quilt patterns, including pantograph (all-over) patterns as well as many block and border patterns. The quilt patterns can be resized and spaced as desired. A consistent stitch pattern is always maintained.
The included "Art & Stitch" program allows you to digitize your desired patterns and apply them to your quilt using the Q-matic. There are now companies, especially in the US, that specialize in digitizing quilt patterns. These quilt designs can be easily integrated into my pattern catalog and are available for quilting.
A top can be quilted in different ways:
In free-motion or all-over quilting, a selected pattern is evenly distributed across the quilt (freehand or with the help of the Q-matic). This can be a pantograph pattern or a meandering pattern. Custom quilting is when the quilt pattern is based on the individual blocks of the quilt top. These blocks are then worked out with varying degrees of intensity using different patterns. Rulerwork is quilting with rulers. This is generally a very complex and time-consuming quilt design, as the individual quilting lines must be marked or drawn out. From individual blocks to borders to an entire quilt, rulers are used in a variety of ways.
Frequently asked questions:
What preparations are necessary?
- Please trim any loose thread ends on the front of the top. If the quilt top is made of both light and dark fabrics, please also trim any loose dark thread ends on the back of the top.
- Remove all selvedges, even on pieced backs.
- All seams on the top must be closed all the way to the hem. To prevent them from opening at the edge, topstitch the top once around the edge with a straight stitch (this seam will later disappear under the binding).
- Straighten the quilt top, batting, and backing at right angles. This means that opposite sides are the same length and parallel to each other, and the adjacent sides are at right angles.
- The fleece and backing must be at least 10 cm larger than the top on each side! For example, if the top is 1.20 m wide and 1.80 m high, the fleece and backing must be at least 1.40 m wide and 2.00 m high.
- Please iron the top carefully.
- Also iron the back thoroughly, especially if it is patched.
- Do not staple or glue the top, fleece or backing.
- I only accept backs made of stretchy fabrics such as fleece, minky, flannel or similar after prior consultation.
- If you would like me to do the binding for the quilt, please provide enough fabric for the bias tape or the finished bias tape.
- I only process supplied yarns after prior agreement.
